There are no accidents in life, only opportunities wearing different clothes."

When the first privately owned Soviet circus arrived in 1990 America as the Soviet Empire unraveled, its elite performers expected to build cultural bridges through spectacular shows. Instead, this prestigious troupe faced a perilous journey through Cold War America.

Circus director Yuri had to navigate treacherous waters where American mobsters, Soviet agents, and political forces circled like predators. Young aerialist Anton dreamed of becoming a clown against his family's wishes, while forbidden romances and unexpected connections bloomed between Soviet performers and Americans who saw past the ideological divide. As high-stakes conspiracies threatened to tear the circus family apart, they had to choose between the authoritarian chains of home and the uncertain promise of freedom.

As The Ringmaster reminds us, "The best Soviet stories are like vodka—they burn with suffering, intoxicate with conflict, keep you stewing in reflection, and yearning for your heart's desire

My Thoughts

Circus Bim Bom is written by Cliff Lovette. This is a new to me author and I am so thrilled to bring you the review of this book. I’m a military historian. I love all things American Wars, however I’m not as familiar with the Cold War as some of the others.

First and foremost, the cover of this book is stunning—it immediately captures your attention and draws you in to discover more. And honestly, who doesn’t love the circus? I’ve never come across a story set in a circus during this particular time period, which makes it even more intriguing.

Soviet performers coming to the United States. This is when espionage was in full swing. Since the conclusion of World War II everyone was suspicious of everyone else.

I really loved this book. Its cast of characters will impress you. Yuri, who is the circus manager  has a lot to deal with. He leads his troupe with ease, and is learning now to navigate political forces including Soviet Spies. I loved seeing all the inners and workings of the circus.

I was born in 1982, so when this story is set I was a young girl. You realize now how much the world was changing with the collapse of USSR. The author has captured this beautifully. I loved the website that you can go to find out more.

Thank you to the author, publisher and RABT for allowing me to read a copy of this book all thoughts are my own.
