About the Book

Book: The Bounty Hunter’s Bride

Author: Janis Jakes

Genre: Christian Fiction

Release date: June, 2021

Bounty hunter Luke Lancaster brings the best of both worlds to his work—the tracking skills of his Comanche father and the marksmanship he learned from his missionary grandfather.

When Luke is hired to track down a young man wanted for murder, he assumes it’s a routine capture, but he’s taken on a wild ride when he discovers that the accused is actually an innocent school teacher who knows too much for her own good.

Determined to uncover the truth, Luke sets out to keep himself and Billie alive while bringing the real outlaws to justice. As they race across Texas, Luke falls more in love with Billie. But could a schoolteacher ever want a half-Comanche bounty hunter? Does Luke stand a chance or is he just her ride to freedom?

About the Author

Janis Jakes encourages women through inspirational fiction and non-fiction. She is a Texas native with a penchant for winding country roads, faded jeans, street tacos, and fiery West Texas sunsets.

More from Janis

It wasn’t unusual to find dime-store western novels on my grandfather’s nightstand. As a young girl, I poured through the yellowed, dog-eared pages. There was just something about the characters—resilient women, courageous men, and hardened outlaws—combined with the rugged terrain and inevitable showdown—that drew me deeper into every story.

In writing The Bounty Hunter’s Bride I wanted to capture the western element while creating faith-filled characters facing an uncertain future. Billie and Luke confront relentless peril with true western grit—finding victory over past regret and love as big as the Texas sky.

Hidden Facts: Billie is named for my mother, who passed away unexpectedly when I was still in high school; she was in her late thirties. The boy’s ranch idea came from a Christian boy’s ranch less than ten miles from my home. And, the early scenery depicted in the story is from my neck of the woods and the land I adore—West Texas.

My Thoughts

The Bounty Hunter’s Bride is the debut novel by  Janis Jakes. I thoroughly enjoy being on a tour when it is a debut novel. This story was a great debut. Luke Lancaster is on the trail of a dangerous murderer... Billie. Or so he thinks. He is shocked to find out that Billie is a female. He has never had to bring in a female on a bounty before. He is not sure if he can believe her innocence. While the two of them are shot at trying to decide what the next move is - Billie is wounded. He takes her to his sisters to be patched up. It is there where Billie bares her soul to another female and  explains what happened. She learns more about Luke and his upbringing. He is half Comanche. He favors his father, who he did not really know .However, he has faith in God, like his mother did. Both of these characters have been wounded and need to heal from their past. Luke wants to help Billie clear her name, and he enjoys spending time together. The romance in the story built at a comfortable pace.

I felt the author did great research and everything appeared historically accurate. She did a great job bringing this time period to life. I loved the tidbits about the Comanches sprinkled into the story. I loved seeing the characters evolve. I hope to read more from this author.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

More from Angela

Flower of the Rockies is one of my favorite stories. I didn’t realize when I started writing about the Montana state flower that I’d be digging into a deeper part of myself. A part I didn’t want to remember.

Stumbling on the women’s club that worked so hard to create symbolism for the state of Montana sparked a story idea. Then that idea needed a character help me tell the story. Then she told me she didn’t know how to read. Okay, I can run with that… But I’m a really good reader. So how do I connect to this widow who needs to learn to read to stop her husband’s partner from cooking her books and stealing everything she has left?

It hit me. She and I had a lot in common. As a kid, I was awkward. I didn’t connect well because I couldn’t read people. Ironically, I read books to learn about people. But it took getting out and being with people to begin really connecting and communicating.

Emmalee doesn’t want to be around people because she’s been rejected for her past and ridiculed publicly. Who wants to be friends with a soiled dove? But, she’s lonely. I suddenly connected on an even deeper level with her. I understood her need for love and acceptance. Her desire to become someone respectable.

On a bigger scale, that’s what the women of Montana were trying to prove, too. That their state fit in with the other states, had something special, something symbolic that showed she was accepted and respected. She had a flag, a state flower, and people who mattered.

Come join me in the Flower of the Rockies. I think you’ll like Emmalee and her journey toward acceptance. There are a lot of layers to the story’s symbolism. I wrote it and have been amazed at how God keeps revealing those layers to me in one short book. Let me know what is revealed to you.

My Thoughts

Flower of the Rockies is book 4 in the Queen of the Rockies series. This series is written by Angela Breidenbach. I have read the whole series, but they can all be read as stand alone books. This story, Emmalee and her past is my favorite so far of the series. Set in 1894 Helena Montana we meet Emmalee. She has lost her husband, who was involved in mining. She inherited his claims, the mines, the house everything. It is a huge improvement from her previous life. She previously was a lady of the night. However, her husband Charles Warren helped save her from that life. Now he was gone and she felt like a tainted dove all over again.

She finds out that Charles' business partner may have been potentially stealing from Charles. Emmalee finds out that she may be destitute soon. She decides to hire a lawyer to see if he can help her. She is worried about her past coming back to haunt her - but she does not want to have to go back to her old life. Her lawyer, Richard Lewis, is captivated by her. He sees her for the person she is now, and not who she once was. He wants to help and represent her. Together they will have to prove that Charles former partner was skimming the profits.

I love the story of second chances. Emmalee was so desperate to leave her old life behind. However, some of the townsfolk will never see her as their equals. I love that Emmalee found someone to help her. She is illiterate and wants to learn to read so that she can fend for herself. Throw in her housekeeper, who made me laugh throughout the book and you have such a wonderful cast of characters.

I absolutely love learning about the founders of Helena Montana. I really enjoyed learning about how Montana picked out their state flower. I would love to see her do other main cities founders. She brings them to life.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read this series. All thoughts are my own.

More from Lorri

Some characters whisper to an author from the recesses of their imagination. For me, Maxell Weld, the Marquis of Daventry, commanded to have his story told. Max appears in my first book, The Duke’s Refuge, as a sure-of-himself, fixated-on-fishing, eight-year-old son of the island schoolmaster who happened to be a Duke in hiding. Now Max is grown, and although he still holds the same quirky characteristics of his youth, he bears the weight of being a marquis and the responsibility of adulthood.

The duty to care for and protect those he loves prompts Max to return to the Leeward Islands to save his closest mate, Charlie. He’s confident that God, with a bit of help from the famous healing springs in Nevis, will save Max’s life. However, Charlie has his own plans to unite the caring but secretive hotel caretaker, Evelyn Sheraton, with his buddy Max.

In the middle of writing, The Marquis’s Pursuit, my cousin passed away suddenly. He was newly married, in his early thirties, and in the process of renovating a house when he became sick. He started losing weight, and before doctors could figure out what was wrong, he went into organ failure and died. My heart still aches for those he left behind, especially his wife and my aunt and uncle.

As I wrote, the lines between fiction and reality blurred, and it’s hard to believe my tears didn’t fry out my laptop as I typed. But I’m grateful for how God used Max’s journey to help me to process why bad things happen, and how ultimately, God has a bigger plan that, at times, we can’t see or fathom.

God doesn’t always work in straight lines. Sometimes we must battle problems and issues to touch as many people as possible on our journey toward heaven. Stories, especially romances in my opinion, broaden our understanding of how those we love comfort and carry us through illness, pain, and sorrow.  Max and Evelyn reminded me to stay anchored to those we love, lean on each other’s faith, and most importantly, that love conquers all.

My Thoughts

The Marquis’s Pursuit is written by Lorri Dudley. This is book five in the Leeward Islands series. I’ve only read one other book in the series and didn’t have a problem following along. This is a great read. It’s around 424 pages and will draw you in within the first few chapters.

Evelyn is running from her past. She’s hiding a secret that makes her very leery and stand off ish toward people she doesn’t know. Max has come to the hotel with his friend Charlie. They’ve come to the Islands to seek medical healing. However the doctor that is supposed to be meeting them isn’t there. Evelyn steps up and offers to care for Charlie.

The book is filled with mystery, forgiveness, healing and romance. I love the reminder that God has forgiven us. This is a wonderful series. The characters have great development.  The storyline is Unique and intriguing.

More from Misty

What do you love most about this genre?

I tend to be a bit of a sentimentalist, so Historical Romance is perfect for me! My favorite period is between 1800 – 1880, when the west was still an extreme frontier. I love the simpler life, where there’s no rat race. Just hard work, plenty of alone time (can you tell I’m an introvert?), and a strong family unit.

Are readers always promised a “happily ever after” in your novels? Why or why not?

Absolutely! I read as an escape, so that happily ever after is important to me. I know my characters will face challenges after the story ends, but I want to finish the book knowing they’ve grown through the story and will be able to meet future struggles with God’s strength and the support of each other—as well as family and friends!

How can readers connect with you?

I love to connect with readers! One of my favorite ways is through my newsletter, and readers can get a free copy of my book, A Pony Express Romance, when they sign up for the newsletter. Here’s the link for that: https://mistymbeller.com/freebook

My Thoughts

Peace in the Mountain Haven is book seven in the Call of the Rockies series that is written by Misty M. Beller. I have been fortunate enough to read the series, but they can be read as stand alones. I always learn so much from this author. Her research is detailed to bring her characters to life across the pages.

Watkuese is desperate to return across the Rocky Mountains before winter sets in. Hugh Charpentier has spent his life watching over his siblings, which meant also ensuring his brother’s widow and babe are settled well into their new life. Now he’s asked to help shepherd a woman and child he barely knows across the mountains. Hugh thinks that he is not worthy of love - and Watkuese is trying so hard to hold it together and be the best mother to her adopted daughter. Hugh shares his faith with Watkuese. He feels so drawn towards Watkuese and her daughter.

The story is well written with wonderful characters. I loved seeing the relationship grow between the two of them. The storyline is unique.
