My Thoughts

Sheltered by The Doctor is written by Danielle Grandinetti. This is book five in the Harbored in Crow’s Nest series. They can be read as stand alones, however characters have been introduced in previous books. Out of the whole series I think this is my favorite one. The cover is so detailed and draws you in.

Mindy is a waitress. She can’t read, but she makes do with her own little language of symbols and shorthand. Her boss is not a nice man. He hires women just for their looks. Mindy has a little sister, Mabel, who is mute and does not speak at all. One day Mabel shows up at the restaurant where Mindy is working at with a note from her parents to asking her to keep her safe.

Nick is an Italian doctor. He hasn’t been very welcomed in the area and he has a lot to prove of himself. This is a time. Where immigrants were frowned upon. Nick is drawn to Mindy and to Mabel also. He wants to try to get to the bottom of why Mabel doesn’t speak. Before he can do too much digging it turns out that Mindy’s father got himself in a bit of a pickle, and Mindy is attacked one day while walking back to her apartment.

Because she was so badly injured she no longer has a job and Nick offers her one as his nurse. I love seeing them work together to take care of the town people. They also have to watch their backs because whoever her father upset is clear set on making sure that Mabel And Mindy are collateral damage.

This book is well written, has very engaging characters and was such a wonderful read. The author writes this time. Very well, and I love that she put in how immigrants may have been treated. I’ve really enjoyed this series. I feel like the characters have become my friends.

About the Authors

Robynne Elizabeth Miller holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction and Fiction and a B.A. in English Literature. She’s the author of ten books and countless articles, including Tennessee Wildcat, From the Mouth of Ma, and The Three Faces of Nellie.

Along with speaking nationally, Robynne is a writing and publishing coach and mentor, a writing teacher at writers conferences, workshops, and retreats, the Writing Track developer and director for Unbound, and the director of the Vision Christian Writers Conference at Mount Hermon.

She’s passionate about helping writers bring their stories and messages into the world and delving into the real people and places which populated the stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

J.D. Rushmore is a history and genealogy buff, with a particular interest in American history before 1900. He’s enamored with the opening of the west, pioneers, the gold rush, the Oregon trail, etc. He’s particularly passionate about researching historical mysteries, especially when they relate to the Little House series of books.

He is a musician in his spare time, as well as an “at everything” father, husband, and friend. He prefers the smell of historic archives to fresh air (unless it involves poking around a remote historic cemetery!) and has a knack for reading handwriting on historical documents that is illegible to others. Nothing thrills him more than finding the one tiny detail that, after being overlooked for decades, or even centuries, changes EVERYTHING.

If you’re a Little House fan like us, you know how risky it was to delve into Mr. Edwards. Rumors have flown for decades as to his real identity, and some folks have double-downed on who they believe he was … declaring a particular name with certainty.

But it just didn’t add up. Through all our team’s collective Little House research and general love of 1800’s history, the name that had been put forward just didn’t make sense.

So, we had a choice.

We could avert our eyes, go about our other writing projects, and leave this mystery untouched. Or, we could, with as much neutrality and meticulous research as possible, see if Mr. Edwards’ true identity could be established.

We risked two things: upsetting some people if our findings didn’t support their theories, and crushing our own hearts if Mr. Edwards turned out to be the one character who Laura Ingalls Wilder constructed purely from her imagination.

We hope our respect for previous researchers, and the strength of our newly discovered information, helped avoid the first worry. And, the second? We were thrilled to discover Mr. Edwards almost certainly wasn’t a work of fiction!

My Thoughts

Tennessee Wildcat: On the Trail of Laura Ingalls Wilders’ Mr. Edwards is written by

Robynne Elizabeth Miller and J.D. Rushmore. I grew up watching Little House on the Prairie. I also read all the books. I was super excited to see this book come up to read and review.

Mr. Edward’s was always one of my favorite characters. The way Laura Ingalls Wilder described him he seemed like he was going to be everybody’s friend. The authors have done a great deal of research to compile the records from the Ingalls time in Kansas.

I also loved how they put in who may not be associated as the real life person. I really learned a lot about the settlement of land and how the Osage Indians were treated.

My Thoughts

Shoot at the Sunset is book five in the Chaparral Hearts series that is written by Kathleen Denly. I’ve read the whole series but they can be read as stand alones. One of the things that I really love about this author is her attention to historic detail. She clearly knows the error that she’s writing in and always seems to bring history to life. Her writing allows you to close your eyes and you can see the scenes unfolding in your mind.

I really loved Preston and Lucy. Preston is a traveling sharp shooter. He returns home when his older sister writes a heartfelt letter requesting he come home. Lucy has not had an easy life. She comes from San Francisco where leaving helped to save her. She’s got hurt and secrets she’s holding in. Lucy’s mother has had a terrible problem with addiction.

The story shifts between Lucy, Preston and Lucy’s mom. The author has woven the stories together seamlessly. She’s done a wonderful job showing God’s redeeming Grace.

The story is well written. The characters are well developed. I’ve really been enjoying getting to know all of the characters of this series. Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

Writing Scandals and Mercies: A Personal Spiritual Journey

Scandals and Mercies has been my hardest story to write thus far. It seems that as I work through issues in my life it may come out in my characters. And I can relate to Nora Armstrong, my heroine. I can understand some of her struggles, her tender heart toward the Coping children, and figuring out who she is in Jesus. The challenges I had in writing this book are reflected in the theme which came through as I wrote it—identity in Christ. Then I became more purposeful in exploring the theme. Nora felt alone and had doubts at the beginning, but then she learned what it meant for her to trust in God despite her difficulties.

Though I’d been a believer for nearly forty years when I began writing Scandals and Mercies, I was—and still am—going through some difficult trials that forced me to really think about what my identity in Christ is. Who am I in Him? Will I depend on Jesus through one of the worst trials of my life? Or will I become bitter? I think of when Jesus said some hard things and many of His disciples deserted Him. He said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” And Peter said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Jesus is truly the only One who has the answers, the words of eternal life. Where else would I turn? And when He doesn’t directly answer, especially the way I want, it’s for me to trust in Him.

And it’s also about sharing in the fellowship of His sufferings, not that we can add anything to our salvation, but that trials and suffering are a part of the Christian life, meant to mold us and grow us in our faith. And if we allow it, to be changed more closely into the someone who projects the image of Christ to others. My husband likes to say we are “Jesus with skin on” for each other.

Working through all of that while writing how Nora grew in her faith took a lot of emotional energy, but God strengthened me and I finished her story, while He is still writing mine!

My Thoughts

Scandals and Mercies is written by Kathleen Rouser. This is book 3, and the Stone Creek bride series, even if you’ve not read the whole series you will not have a problem following along. One of the things I love about this author is her ability to transport you back in time. She always does such care research to bring her story to life.

Nora Armstrong has been raised by her wealthy aunt and uncle. They want her to find a suitable husband and not her dreams of becoming a teacher. However there’s the weight of family secrets that’s holding Nora down.

James Cooper is a big city reporter. When the Stonecreek local home for unwed mothers burns down he’s there to catch a scoop. he suddenly finds out that there’s more to the story and in surprising places.

James and Nora have a clear attraction to each other. They have a past and have to get past some hurt from the past. I love that they both have meddling aunts. They need to team up and try and unravel the mystery. The town becomes divided to if they should continue to help the young unwed mothers.

Family secrets. Town secrets. Endangered mothers in need of protection. The author has done wonderful job with this story. The characters are flawed. They have baggage, hurt and lots of secrets.
