About the Author

Rebecca Duvall Scott is an award-winning author with titles holding #1 bestseller within her publishing companies long after release. From the time I was a little girl, my grandmother would gather me around her kitchen table – usually with homemade peach pies – and tell me stories of our forebears. I found the experiences of those who came before me to be both tragic and joyful, but most of all I found them worthy of being told and never forgotten. When I was 16, I started taking notes on everything my grandmother could remember about her mother (one of the humblest and most heroic of my ancestors) and as a senior in college, I turned in the first 70 pages of the manuscript based on her childhood, When Dignity Came to Harlan. I’ll never forget how on graduation day, my creative writing teacher shook my hand and said, “Rebecca, please finish the story.” It took years to finish my debut novel… I think because I had to grow up and develop a deep enough emotional well to do it justice… but finish the story I did. Little did I know, however, this bestselling and award-winning book, the one I was always meant to write, would be the starter of a new, yet powerfully old-fashioned, Christian historical fiction series!

My Thoughts

When Dignity Came to Harlan is a Christian Historical Fiction book. This book is set in the early 1900's. There was still a lot going on during this time period. The country is still rebuilding after the war, and families were trying to do what was best for them. Anna Beth is twelve when her family moves from Missouri to Kentucky. However, life changes when they run out of money and is left with her sisters in the care of strangers.

I could not imagine leaving my children with people that I did not know. Anna is faced with new reality. She has to work from dawn to dusk. Jack and Grace Grainger have some issues of their own and are constantly fighting. Your heart will go out to the sisters. Jack is not a kind man. He is not happy that these kids were in their care.

This book is based on some of the author's family history. That is very interesting to learn. I love when authors take personal moments and weave them into their stories. The story is well written and it flows nicely. This is the first story that I have read by this author. I hope to read more of her work in the future. I’m so excited to share Silencing the Siren with you! This book was so much fun to write and research. I learned so many fun facts about old cars, old New York, and even doorbells!

Yes, you read that correctly. Doorbells.

These noisy items were such a novelty in the 1920s that they were often given as Christmas gifts!

Crazy, right?

I wanted both Andrew and Annabel to represent that feeling we have all experienced at least once in our lives. That feeling of not belonging. It looks different for each person, but it’s a uniting feeling.

Annabel will never be accepted by those outside her family, but they more than make up for that. Andrew is popular and well-off in society, but as he comes to know the Lord, he starts to feel that rift with his superficial friends and family. It’s with other believers, Annabel’s family, that he finds that deep relationship he desires. They are more than willing to provide.

This is the beauty of the body of Christ. When we are sick or in need, the body of Christ comes together to support you in that time of need and extend Christ’s love to all corners of the globe.

I hope you enjoy reading Silencing the Siren as much as I enjoyed writing it!

My Thoughts

I have had the honor of working with Denise L. Barela for the last several years. I have been blessed to be a part of the Celebrate Lit blogging team since 2017. When I saw that she was releasing her first book, I was super excited for her. Silencing the Siren is in my top 3 of the Ever After Mystery series. This is book 7 in that series.

This is a different take on the Little Mermaid. We see a character, who is in a wheelchair. Annabel Thompson. Freakshow mermaid extraordinaire. Annabel was born with deformities in her legs that has left her in a wheelchair. Annabel was used to people staring and making comments about her. However, Annabel has caught the eye of wealthy Andrew Grayson. Andrew cannot understand why he is so drawn to her. His parents and friends are advising him to forget about her. It was sad to see that his parents cared more about his image - then his happiness.

When Annabel goes missing and is presumed dead, Andrew is devastated. He is determined to try and solve the mystery of her disappearance. Andrew starts out the story as a young naive boy, but evolves throughout the book. The author has crafted a beautiful story that you will not want to put down.

I’m often asked where ideas for my stories originate. That answer varies because inspiration comes from unexpected sources. Searching for inspiration seems to make it more elusive. Story ideas usually happen when I’m doing something unrelated to my books, like visiting a museum or historical home while on vacation.

Ideas for this series stemmed from research for a “Civil War Women” series of articles I wrote for my blog. There are many women from the North and South featured in that series—and many more that deserve recognition. What surprised me was the number of known female spies from both sides. It’s likely that many others either didn’t seek praise after the war or feared retribution and never revealed their activities.

Rose Greenhow, a Confederate spy living in Washington DC (Washington City, as it was called at that time) in 1861, created an impressive spy network. Coded messages were sent on a “Secret Line.” Several couriers in a chain passed on messages in common places such as docks, taverns, and farmhouses.

Rose’s spy network from Boston to New Orleans was the largest in the war—48 women and 2 men.

Allan Pinkerton, head of Lincoln’s Intelligence Service, was given the task to find Confederate spies and he placed Greenhow under surveillance.

She was arrested in August of 1861.

Though the series is about a fictional family, there are actual historical spies who touch the stories. Rose is one of them.

Avenue of Betrayal is set in Washington City (Washington DC) in 1861, where a surprising number of Confederate sympathizers and spies lived.

Through both real and fictional characters, this series will highlight activities spies were involved in and some of the motives behind their decisions.

My Thoughts

Avenue of Betrayal is book one in the Spies of the Civil War series that is written by Sandra Merville Hart. This is the first book that I have read by this author, and it will not be the last. This book was right up my alley. I love reading about the Civil War. I actually did my master thesis on the use of Women and African Americans as spies in the American Revolution and Civil War.

This book opens up in 1861. We meet the Swanson family. I really fell in love with this family immediately. Annie has come from a strong abolitionist family. She is very surprised to find out that her brother has signed up to fight with the Confederacy in North Carolina. This was a time in our nation where it was brother against father, neighbor verses neighbor, etc. However, Annie's father does not want anyone to know that his son is fighting for the Confederacy.

Sergeant-Major John Finn wants to get to know Annie better. She has captured his heart. Then he is asked to spy on her father. John becomes worried. He is growing close to Annie and her family, he feels guilty for what his mission is. What will happen if Annie finds out?

I love the theme of forgiveness. I love that the author wrote that in - John had a job to do - and it could cost him his relationship with Annie. Could she forgive him if she finds out. The characters in this story are well written. The story is unique and engaging. I cannot wait to read the second book.

About the Author

This is Elizabeth’s sixth novel and her second complete historical which pulls out her love of research. Her books concentrate on Michigan history, especially in her county along the banks of the Shiawassee River. Elizabeth has lived in Michigan her whole life where she has raised three children and will soon welcome the birth of her first granddaughter. She loves capturing not only the early history of the state but the amazing aspects of living in the Great Lakes state.

After working as a newspaper reporter, I soon realized that the best part of writing articles was the research. When I began writing historical fiction, I realized it pulled in that element to the extreme. I then fell in love with history but especially the elements of searching through a cemetery for a specific character, finding significant paragraphs in a newspaper article about a particular family, and then sitting down to fictionalize the details I found. It was fun to mix history with fiction.

The Baker family, in the The Newburg Chronicles series, came to life in an era that doesn’t always get much attention in the historical fiction scene…the 1830s. This was the beginning of many small settlements in Michigan due to the opening of the Erie Canal. Settlers would travel the canal into Detroit by steamboat and then purchase oxen in the city to move inland. Often they’d only have a map with their property outlined and would then have to blaze a trail west and north to find that property to build a home and farm the land…often sight unseen.

The trips inland were grueling and filled with many unknowns including Indians, rough river crossings, swarms of mosquitoes, and howling wolves. What they’d discover was a vast wilderness with trees to gird, cut, and use to build their homes. They’d then need oxen to help prepare the soil to plant crops. Daily chores were exhausting for not only the men but also the women and children.

How did they survive? How did families work together to establish a farm? Did they get help or were they all alone? If you enjoy learning about the early settlers of a new territory, The Newburg Chronicle series is for you!

My Thoughts

Crooked Paths Straight is book two in the Newburg Chronicles that is written by Elizabeth Wehman. I have read book one. This is a continuing story of the Baker family who settles in the Michigan Territory in 1833. We got to know them very well in the first book The Baker family moved to start a new life. I appreciate how much research went into the went into the story. I felt that it made the story as real as possible.

What the Baker family had to deal with while setting up that first establishment was a lot. The description of the fierce winter storms had me pulling up my blanket around me. I love how the family pitched in and tried to help everyone that came across their path.

The lesson in the first book was listening to God's prompting and following it. This book's lesson was treating people equally, helping them out and being welcoming to everyone despite how they may treat you. It also is a lesson in how important prayer is in our daily lives. I have enjoyed the Baker family and watching them establish in the Michigan Territory.
